Often called off page links, backlinks are the sledgehammer of search engine positioning and traffic generation.

Backlinks have three key properties, the web page from which the backlinks are derived, the anchor text of the backlinks and what’s on the page to which the backlinks sends the visitor to.

The amount of backlinks

The number of Backlinks to a page is one of the factors the search engines consider when deciding how to position the page in the SERPS (Search Engine Page Results).

The origin of the backlinks

The pages from which backlinks originate pass ‘authority’ and searchers to the page to which the backlinks point.|Backlinks are like votes – the higher the number of votes (backlinks) the more authoritative the page is considered by the search engine.

But ‘votes’ cast through backlinks from trusted or authoritative pages to a page have greater influence over the search engines perception of this page than backlinks coming from pages with lower ‘trust’ or authority.Real examples of trusted sources of backlinks carrying higher authority are pages in education (.edu) and government (.gov) web sites.

Google Page Rank

a value awarded by Google to any page that it considers over a period to have attracted, sustained and continued to accumulate relevant backlinks) pass some of their page rank via the backlink to the target page.

The ‘anchor text’

Similar to a label, the backlink anchor text influences the search engines classification of the backlink. If the content of the page is about ‘parenting’ and the backlink on the page is labeled or given the ‘anchor’ text ‘parenting’ then the search engines deduce this to be of more value to the searcher looking for sites associated with ‘parenting’ than if the backlink was labeled ‘babycare’.

Common A lot of people undermine their backlinks strategies because they fixate on quantity as opposed to quality of backlinks. For instance if the majority of your backlinks to your ‘parenting’ page originate from sites not related to ‘parenting’ then whilst you have backlinks they will almost always bring you the wrong visitors.

How to build backlinks

So here is my no obligation guidance for getting backlinks to your pages, high rankings in the search engine results pages and quality traffic to your site:

1. Initially you should focus on choosing the correct keywords|Finding the right keywords from the start is critical.
2. I like to create a keyword ‘cloud’.
3. I most often start with a single ‘top’ level keyword or key phrase which has significant visitor traffic.
4. To work out the volume of visitor traffic is being coming from searches for my primary keyword I use the Google keyword analyzer tool.
5. I look at words and search phrases associated with my primary phrase and create my ‘cloud’.
6. I then create content in the form of articles and videos with backlinks with the correct ‘anchor text’ to my ‘money’ or ‘target’ page and distribute these to the various directories.
7. When I write my content I do so with the reader in mind so as each item of content attracts backlinks to itself as well as sends backlinks to my target pages.
